Galli (Pd): "The flat tax is out of this world"

The flat tax proposed by some political forces, with rates of 15 or 20%, is "out of this world". Giampaolo Galli, deputy of the Pd, said it in an interview published today in the Sun 24 Hours.

It is true, recalls Galli, that the Bruno Leoni Institute has proposed a 25% flat tax. In that case, however, the abolition of all fiscal exports was also envisaged. “So a credible proposal should include the abolition of subsidized VAT and tax relief on first-home mortgages or on health care costs”, continues Galli, who does not believe in the political feasibility of such unpopular choices. The flat tax, according to the Pd deputy, "can become a useful proposal after we have drastically reduced spending and tax evasion".

In short, Galli believes that this electoral campaign has "started badly" and that politics must "make proposals compatible with Italy's very high public debt", because "draconian maneuvers are not needed, but we must make a commitment to increase the primary surplus up to 3-4% to reach a balanced budget gradually but also with a certain path".

In the end, for Galli, "there are no miracles to be performed or magic wands", therefore "it is right to reduce taxes", but only after having "reduced public spending and above all tax evasion".
