G8, Letta: "Italy is the country that gains the most from the EU-US agreement"

“The historic moment of the G8 was the transatlantic free trade agreement. There is the concrete possibility of an agreement with all of North America, including Canada. If it were possible to conclude the negotiations in the short term, I believe that the birth of a common Euro-Atlantic market would be the best response to the crisis. And Italy is the European country that has the most to gain from the transatlantic agreement, according to our calculations”. Prime Minister Enrico Letta said it in the press conference at the end of the summit in Ireland among the eight main political leaders of the planet.

“The exchange of information is now a goal within reach. The fight against evasion and tax avoidance, like that against tax havens – so that all countries adhere to the platform developed by the OECD – is now without return, and the word 'Switzerland' is the first that comes to mind. This theme was at the center of this G8 and I am sure it will be confirmed at the G20 in St. Petersburg on the agenda for September”.

“These are issues that have a very concrete internal return to recover resources and taxes – continued Letta -. The OECD's pressure on tax havens has now become unsustainable. The issue of the erosion of the tax base by multinationals is also important, Obama has also spoken about it in a marked way, and it is a deeply felt issue in Italy too, where our desire to attract multinationals needs rules that bring the multinationals to pay taxes where they produce”.
