G7: no to terrorism and protectionism

The G7 in Taormina concludes with an agreement against terrorism and against protectionism (not taken for granted on the eve of Trump's guidelines) but the agreement on the climate fails because the US has asked for time to develop a position - They wonder about migrants " coordinated efforts” – The anti-Russia sanctions will depend on the timing of Moscow's application of the Minsk agreements

G7: no to terrorism and protectionism

Two steps forward in the fight against terrorism and protectionism, a flop on the climate and a draw on migrants and anti-Russia sanctions: the G7 in Taormina can be summed up like this, which saw three important debuts such as that of the new US president Donald Trump , the French Emmanuel Macron and the British Prime Minister Theresa May.

"Unity and determination" against terrorism were reaffirmed in the final declarations by the Big Seven who decided to intensify collaboration with the exchange of intelligence information and, accepting a request from May, appeal to "service providers for control" of online content.

Less obvious but no less relevant is the agreement against protectionism, considering Trump's orientations (“America first”) in the electoral campaign and beyond. Instead, the final declaration of Taormina "confirms the commitment to keep our markets open and to fight protectionism" and "all unfair trade practices".

On the other hand, no progress on the climate, where compliance with the Paris agreements have been confirmed only by six signatory countries but not by the US, which has not yet decided the line to follow even if Trump has promised to do so within a week. But Merkel has made it clear that no step back is possible on this.

Equal and pact on migratory flows, for which the commitment to "coordinated efforts at national and international level" and the defense of the rights of migrants and those of States to protect their borders were underlined.

Finally, on the sanctions against Russia it was decided that their duration will depend on the time it will take Moscow to apply the Minsk agreements on Ukraine.
