G7 high voltage and Conte waves

Trump splits the G7 on duties and on Russia - Conte first indulges the American president on Russia but then, pressed by the EU, backs down - Italy's line in the international arena has never been so ambiguous - VIDEO.

G7 high voltage and Conte waves

Reverse of Prime Minister Conte on Russia, at the G7 in Charlevoix, Canada. The debut of the new yellow-green chief executive on the international stage turns out to be, as expected, immediately delicate, given the contradictory positions of the majority especially with regard to Russia: first Conte indulges US President Donald Trump, who with tweets invokes the return of Russia to the G8, then retraces his steps after a 5-party summit convened by Macron with France, Germany, the UK and the EU, after which the president of the EU Council Tusk assures: "The countries Europeans will have the same line. Trump challenges the world order”.

"What worries me most - says Tusk - is seeing that the world order, based on common rules, is challenged not by the usual suspects but, surprisingly, by its main architect and guarantor: the United States". EU leaders seek the balance with Macron's mediation and eventually find a common position, even if Italy has reiterated the need to open its doors to Putin and is showing softer duties. “We will be the bearers of a moderate position – explains Conte -, we will try to understand the reasons that lead to taking certain positions and we will act accordingly”. However, at the end of the meeting, French President Macron flaunted optimism, assuring that the European line is "unitary and determined".

Previously Conte had also been sibylline on the issue of sanctions, saying he would consider whether or not to veto the renewal of trade restrictions against Moscow at the EU summit later this month. For the rest, the premier met all the leaders bilaterally, except Trump who flies away early to meet Kim in Singapore, and reiterated that he had come to Quebec "to defend Italian interests on the strength of intense political legitimacy". Meanwhile, a certain indifference to the issue is coming from Moscow: "Russia is concentrating on other formats": this is how Putin's spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, commented from China to the RIA Novosti agency Trump's words on a possible return of the Kremlin to the summit of the greats.
