Clashes between police and demonstrators continue on the first day of the G20 in Hamburg. The German police, after last night's demonstration, intervened this morning with water cannons to disperse a block of anti-G20 demonstrators on the shores of the Outer Alster lake, a short distance from the place hosting the summit.
The number of policemen injured in the clashes has risen to 159, while there are reportedly a hundred injured demonstrators (there are no official estimates). At least 44 people arrested, various damages. 30 cars were set on fire by the protesters, shops and the prosecution office in the Altona district were damaged.

Georg Ismail, spokesman for the autonomous left quoted by Spiegel spoke of a "terrifying action by the police", stating that the rights of those who protest are systematically ignored.
Anti-G20 protesters prevented US first lady Melania Trump from leaving her residence and taking part in the planned program for partners of heads of state. The Dpa writes it.
Meanwhile Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin met for the first time. "I'm happy to meet you, phone calls are never enough: if we want to resolve bilateral problems and the most important issues on the international agenda, we need personal meetings". Thus the Russian president to his US counterpart in the initial part of the talks which the press was able to witness. "I hope today's meeting produces positive results," he added.
