Nuclear fusion, over 1,2 billion orders from Italy

Italian high-tech industries play a leading role in the creation of Iter, the first fusion power plant in the world. An Enea study analyzes the effects of the project under construction. Here are the Top 10 names

Nuclear fusion, over 1,2 billion orders from Italy

The Made in Italy high technology industry has achieved a new important milestone: over 1,2 billion orders for the construction of Iter, the first nuclear fusion power plant in the world, under construction in Caradachi in France. The news was reported by ENEA which, together with the Cattaneo University, has analyzed the effects of the project in which it participates directly both as planning and as support for Italian supplies.

Among the industrial names that stand out in the construction of the plant are De Pretto Industrie (DPI), Ettore Zanon (EZ), SIMIC, OCEM Power Electronics, Angelantoni Test Technologies (ATT), ASG Superconductors, Walter Tosto and Ansaldo Nucleare which at the head of an all-Italian consortium has won an important order for the assembly of ITER, the latest in chronological order, which has made it possible to exceed the 'threshold' of 1,2 billion.

"Italian companies have managed to win supply and service contracts for a total value second only to that of France if civil works and infrastructure are also considered", says Johannes Schwemmer, director of F4E, the EU agency which manages the European contribution to the construction of Iter. An important result that represents over 50% of the value of tenders issued by F4E, taking into account that the orders are awarded with tenders on a competitive basis, selecting the best offer according to technical-economic criteria, rules and principles of community public procurement.

The figures were published by the magazine Enea Energy, Environment and Innovation which dedicates the latest issue to the "Energy of the stars" and its effects on the industrial system. Nuclear fusion, it should be remembered, unlike energy obtained by fission does not produce waste and radioactive residues. Hence the strong interest in the Iter project participated by the main world powers, including Europe.
