Fs, sprint on the national network and on the 4 European corridors

Ferrovie dello Stato aims to strengthen the network and accelerate the creation of European corridors

state Railways intends to develop the Italian railway lines functional to the four European corridors crossing our country: Rhine-Alps, Mediterranean, Baltic-Adriatic and Scandinavia-Mediterranean. The group writes it in a note, specifying that "work is already underway to adapt the shape to continental standards, to build rest and/or precedence tracks capable of accommodating trains up to 750 meters long and to install the latest technologies generation for the safe spacing of trains and the management and control of railway traffic".

According to the CEO and dg Renato Mazzoncini, “to compete on a continental level in both passenger and freight transport, it is necessary to equip the country with an avant-garde infrastructural system capable of adequately responding to the transport needs that will be developed by the market. And for national railway infrastructures, one of the pillars of the 2017-2026 Business Plan and an integral part of the European system, the FS Italiane Group has planned economic investments of 57,5 billion euros, 33,5 for the conventional network and 24 for the AV/HC network and the European TEN-T Corridors, out of a total of 94”.

Infrastructure that will be developed "to increase integration with the European network - continues the note - to develop rail connections and traffic of the Alpine passes with France, Switzerland and Austria, to significantly improve integrated mobility in large metropolitan areas and urban; and to make the transport of people and goods efficient, effective and environmentally sustainable".

In this way, the national railway system will be able to respond to what is indicated in the Transport White Paper adopted by the European Union in 2011, which foresees, by 2030, for distances exceeding 300 km, the transfer by railway wagons of 30% of goods, and 50% by 2050.
