FS plans new connections in Europe: between Italy-Austria-Germany and Portugal-Spain

After France and Spain the Frecciarossa of the FS Group travels to Germany. The European Commission has just launched 10 new pilot projects for rail links between two or more European countries to encourage the use of the train for continental travel. Two European novelties are from Trenitalia, lead company of the Passenger Hub. The first for a link between Italy, Austria e Germany, by 2026, the other between Spain e Portugal.

“While the demand for green mobility is growing – he declared Adina Vãlea, European Commissioner for Transport – we need the rail market to respond better and faster, especially for long and cross-border journeys. That's why the European Commission now wants to help railway companies by creating new international rail connections, day and night, by breaking down borders”.

Italy-Germany and Spain-Portugal: the two projects of the FS Group

The first is related to the new rides Rome-Munich e Milan-Munich proposed by Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane and Deutsche Bahn. With the possibility, moreover, of extension up to Berlin. The routes are: departure from Rome and then stops in Florence, Bologna, Verona, Rovereto, Trento, Bolzano, Brennero, Innsbruck and Munich. For the journey that starts from the Lombard capital, the stops are as follows: Brescia, Verona, Bolzano, Brennero, Innsbruck and Munich. The frequency of these trains will be daily and the services will be provided in collaboration between Trenitalia, ÖBB and DB.

The convoy model that will be able to support the journey has also been identified: the Frecciarossa 1000, as it already complies with the Technical Specifications for Interoperability (STI) - documents issued as Commission Regulations - and already approved in Spain and for interoperability services between Italy and France.

As far as the Iberian peninsula is concerned, there is ILSA. Also in this case there are two connections proposed: one capable of connecting Lisbon a La Coruna and the other that always from the Portuguese capital will lead up to Madrid. ILSA, owned by Trenitalia, is the consortium that has brought, thanks to the brand iryō, the Frecciarossa in Spain connecting several Spanish cities.
