Within the Pnrr funds, Trenitalia, a subsidiary of the FS Group, ha signed a contract for the provision of 70 new Intercity Night carriages for a value of approximately 140 million euros.
The agreement is part of a broader framework which provides for the purchase of up to 370 new carriages for a value of approximately 730 million euros.
The new carriages will be operational to and from Sicily
The new carriages will be intended for Intercity Night services to and from Sicily. They will ensure full accessibility for people with reduced mobility, including dedicated toilets and seats. They will offer optimal sleeping comfort, thanks to advanced soundproofing, through sleeping cabins and berths. Alternatively, passengers will be able to travel in the new state-of-the-art seats. There will be a real-time video surveillance system to improve passengers' peace of mind and safety.
The carriages should enter service by June 30, 2026.
The typologies of the new carriages
The 70 night carriages are divided into three types: 44 "berths", 22 "beds" and 4 with seats. The sleeper carriages offer adjustable climate control in each cabin, with 7 cabins containing 4 beds each. The “Sleeping” carriages they include comfortable bedrooms, with 2 doubles and 6 with two single beds, equipped with private toilet and shower. Each carriage has an adjustable air conditioning system for the rooms and electronic access control.
Le carriages with seats they offer a spacious passenger lounge with seats arranged in a 2+1 configuration for optimal comfort. The seats are equipped with individual lighting, armrests and improved headrests. The spacious central aisle facilitates movement inside during travel, and luggage and baggage compartments are located in the vestibule areas. The vestibules include a toilet on each side and offer dedicated spaces for carrying bicycles on board.
Renew the available vehicle fleet
The investment objective is renew obsolete rolling stock, also considering the aspect of environmental sustainability. Overall, within the PNRR funds, 200 million euros have been allocated to improve Intercity connections to southern Italy. The financial resources will also be used for theacquisition of 7 hybrid trains with triple fuel system (electric, diesel and batteries). These trains will be used for i Intercity connections between Reggio Calabria and Taranto, with an estimated value of around 60 million euros.
