FS Italiane, a special stamp dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the E.431 three-phase electric locomotive

The rail industry's pinnacle of technology and speed is commemorated in a exclusive stamp to celebrate the centenary of the building. The Ministry of Economic Development, in fact, has authorized the issue of a commemorative ordinary stamp, belonging to the thematic series "Excellencies of the productive and economic system", dedicated to the three-phase electric locomotive E.431 on the centenary of its construction.

The special philatelic cancellation was held today, 23 June, at the Roma Ostiense station, in the presence of Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Deputy Minister for Economic Development, Maria Bianca Farina, President of Poste Italiane, Luca Torchia, Chief Communication Officer of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, Massimo Bruno, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer of the FS Group and Luigi Cantamessa, General Manager of the FS Italiane Foundation.

Italian FS and the relaunch of mobility infrastructures

With the start of the Business plan 2022-2031, the FS Group is also the protagonist of a new season of relaunch of the country's mobility infrastructures, with a view to integrating different transport modes, in the name of sustainability.

In order to make the network increasingly greener and more efficient, the FS Group has planned over the next ten years 190 billion euros of investments. Among the many projects in the pipeline there is also the increase in kilometers of electrified network, which will go from the current 12.160 (almost 72% of the national railway network) to around 14.000 total kilometers (around 83%).

The three-phase electric locomotive E.431

From 1922, the E.431 three-phase electric locomotive was used to upgrade the state railways electric fleet following the completion of the first electrification programs of the railway network. For some years, explains a note, it represented the best of our railway industry, both from a technological point of view, with its ability to express absolutely excellent performance for the time, also in terms of speed, and from an stylistic and design, thanks to its characteristic and original silhouette.
