FS Italiane presents Blues in Florence: Trenitalia's first hybrid train

New on arrival hybrid trains branded Trenitalia (FS Italiane Group). Blues is the new triple-fuel train with an even more sustainable green footprint due to its reduced environmental impact: it can travel with diesel engines on non-electrified lines, with an electric motor on electrified ones, and with batteries to run the first and last mile on non-electrified lines or when parked in stations, in order to eliminate emissions and noise. In total, the investment for Blues trains is around 800 million euros.

The road show in the main Italian squares starts from the Tuscan capital, in Piazza della Repubblica, to let the public know the new convoy of the regional fleet of Trenitalia designed and built by Hitachi Rail which joins the Rock and Pop trains already being delivered from May 2019 throughout Italy.

The Blues road show will also visit other Italian cities. The next stages are scheduled in Reggio Calabria, Palermo, Catania, Cagliari, Trieste and Rome.

The deliveries of the Blues regional train will start right from Tuscany. In 2022 the new train will arrive on the non-electrified lines of the Sienese basin, the Faenza basin and the Val di Sieve, foreseeing a complete change in the way of traveling on these lines in 2023. A total of 110 Blues trains are planned in the following Regions: Valle d'Aosta, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Tuscany, Lazio, Calabria, Sicily, Sardinia.

Hybrid technology allows for a 50% reduction in fuel consumption, as well as a sharp decrease in emissions CO2 compared to the current diesel convoys - reads a note from the group -. The Blues is equipped with ERTMS, the most advanced railway signaling system in Europe.

The revolution of the FS Italiane Group's regional sector therefore continues "which foresees the renewal of 80% of the fleet within the next four years".
