Fs, Naples-Bari high speed: excavation of the Grottaminarda tunnel completed

The excavation of the Grottaminarda tunnel, the first section of the Naples-Bari AV/AC route, built with the Aurora TBM, has been completed. With an investment of 628 million euros, the project is expected to reduce travel times between Naples and Bari, also stimulating the local economy

It ended yesterday excavation of the Grottaminarda tunnel (AV) on the Apice – Hirpinia lot, the first work of theAV/AC itinerary Naples – Bari to be entirely realized through theuse of a mechanized mole, the Tbm Aurora. The works on the Apice – Hirpinia lot were entrusted by RFI to the Hirpinia AV Consortium (Webuild), under the Works Management of Italferr, with a investment of approximately 628 million euros.

Three of the eight planned mechanical moles are operational

I am currently three of the eight planned mechanical moles are operational: the TBM Aurora, which will now move to work on the Melito tunnel; the TBM Futura, in action on the Rocchetta tunnel; and the TBM Marina, which is excavating one of the two tubes of the Orsara tunnel. Each mole works 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with the support of over 100 specialists for waterproof tunnel lining.

The new AV/AC line Naples – Bari

The new AV/AC Naples – Bari line is part of the European Rail Corridor TEN-T Scandinavia – Mediterranean and receives funding from the Pnrr. With the Cancello – Frasso route planned for 2025, the travel time between Bari and Naples will be reduced to 2 hours and 40 minutes. At the end of the work, the journey between Bari and Naples will be two hours, and from Lecce and Taranto to Rome four hours.

The project, which involves around seven thousand people between engineers, technicians and workers, and two thousand companies, represents an important driver of economic and employment development in the region.
