Another step forward for the AV/AC line Verona-Padova: in San Martino Buon Albergo construction site, in the province of Verona, it has been completed excavation of the artificial tunnel, marking a crucial stage for the first functional lot of the Verona-Bivio Vicenza section. The demolition of the diaphragm brings the progress of the works to 60%, with the close of the project planned for the 2026.
The tunnel, approximately 2 kilometers long, with a width of over 10 meters and an internal height of 7 meters, was built with the “Top Down” method, which allows to reduce the environmental impact and ensure stability during the excavation. This section is central to the new infrastructure, designed to improve traffic regularity and enhance rail services.
A strategic work for Italy and Europe
Behind this gallery there is much more than a simple tunnel: the new AV/AC Verona-Padova line is part of the wider Mediterranean Core Corridor project, one of the key corridors of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), which connects the ports of the Iberian Peninsula to the Ukrainian border, crossing northern Italy. The work, which includes a investment overall 3,2 billion euros, is also an economic driver: currently, more than 4.000 people and 450 companies are involved in the works.
The first lot, 44,2 km long, includes the Verona-Bivio Vicenza section, while the second will concern Vicenza and the third, currently being planned, Vicenza-Padova. Once completed, the line will connect Milan and Venice, promoting sustainable and fast mobility.
