Fs, here is the railway transport of the future: magnetic levitation trains are being tested in Puglia

In Puglia you will experience new advanced forms of railway mobility for use in rail transport magnetic levitation technologies, able to speed up mobility systems, shorten journey times and reduce the environmental impact of transport, also through the use of renewable energy sources. With this objective in mind, the agreement signed between the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility, the Italian State Railways, RFI, the Puglia Region and the Port Authority of Taranto was born.

In detail, they will be allocated overall 4 million euro of which 1,8 million from the Puglia Region, a further 1,8 million from RFI and 400 thousand euros from the Port System Authority of the Ionian Sea-Port of Taranto, to cover the costs of the various phases up to the creation of prototypes and experimentation on the field.

Magnetic levitation rail transport

Going into more detail, the project envisages, first of all, the realization of advanced feasibility studies for the use of magnetic levitation technologies in rail transport, the development of first phase technical-economic feasibility projects and the creation of prototypes . Magnetic levitation is in fact one of the most futuristic frontiers of rail transport and is based on the repulsion and magnetic attraction between the train and the rail, used as a means of locomotion.

The comments of MIMS, Fs and Rfi

"The Memorandum of Understanding strengthens the commitment to place Italy at the forefront of technological development applied to sustainable mobility, guaranteeing maximum safety", underlined the minister Enrico Giovannini.

"Being an active part in a frontier development, such as the one covered by the Protocol that we signed today - said the chief technology Innovation & Digital Officer of FS, Robert Tundo – will bring further value to the FS Group, in terms of technological and digital knowledge and skills, which will also serve as an accelerator for the achievement of the objectives of the Business Plan and the investments of the PNRR".

"We are at the forefront in the study and development of innovative systems to improve the mobility of travelers and goods - declared the CEO of Rfi, Vera Fiorani -. We have been committed to this for years through partnerships with important European companies in the sector which allow us to study the new advanced magnetic levitation transport systems and their potential applicability in our territories”.
