Il Ferrovie dello Stato Group continues unabated its commitment to create new works and ensure the maintenance of infrastructure. In just 72 hours, the Infrastructure pole of Fs has awarded and launched tenders tender for a total value of over 3,6 billion euros.
Among main tenders launched from the Italian Railway Network: the Rome-Pescara (two sections for a total of 477 million), the Potenza-Metapontum (265 million), the Virgolo tunnel (73 million), the Turin direct line Porta Nuova-Porta Susa (67,7 million) and thePalermo ring (93 million). In addition to these, there is a 900 million tender for the extraordinary maintenance of railway infrastructure throughout Italy.
The tenders for the connection between the Bergamo station andOrio al Serio airport (113 million) and that for the electrification of the line Cagliari-Oristano (45 million).
Improving the transport system in Italy
They have been allocated 2 billion euros for the new ones RFI railway works, with Gianpiero Strisciuglio as manager, e 1,6 billion euros for road projects entrusted to ANAS, under the guidance of Aldo Isi. More than 1 billion euros has been earmarked for maintenance work on the railway and road networks throughout the country.
The tenders are part of the plan of the Fs and of the CEO Luigi Ferraris for improve the transport system in Italy. The goal is make the system more integrated, efficient, fast and intermodal, both for passengers and for goods. The plan provides for an investment of over 180 billion euros in rail and road infrastructure over the next 10 years.
Currently, I am atactive approximately 4.000 shipyards throughout Italy, for a value of over 49 billion euros, which include new works and maintenance works on existing lines. The National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) plays an important role in this process, with approximately 24 billion euros entrusted to RFI, of which over 80% is already under construction. This will contribute to the construction of works that will be operational by 2026.
The tenders for the railway network
- Double Rome-Pescara: two tenders launched for the design and construction of the doubling of the Interporto d'Abruzzo – Manoppello and Manoppello – Scafa sections on the Rome-Pescara line. The total value of the tenders is approximately 478 million euros. Improvement works will be carried out at the Manoppello and Alanno Scafa stations to promote accessibility and intermodality.
- Potenza-Metapontum speed-up: published a tender for the design and execution of works to speed up the Grassano-Bernalda section on the Battipaglia-Potenza Metaponto-Taranto line. The amount of the tender is 265 million euros, financed with funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). These interventions will make it possible to improve the rail transport offer, reducing journey times, increasing the regularity of traffic and developing new services.
- New Virgolo Tunnel: the call for tenders for the design and construction of the new Virgolo tunnel has been launched. The value of the contract is over 73 million euros, also financed with funds from the PNRR. This intervention aims to increase the capacity of the infrastructure connected to the Brenner axis and the Bolzano node, separating the traffic flows of the Brenner line from those of the Merano line. An independent station entrance will be built for the line to Merano and a variant of the three-track layout will be built for the Brenner line.
- Closure of the Palermo Ring: tender for the design and construction of the second phase of the closure of the Palermo railway ring, in the Politeama-Notarbartolo section. The value of the work is approximately 93 million euros. This intervention will allow the complete closure of the railway ring, increasing the capacity and accessibility of the section and creating a potential direct connection between the "Falcone e Borsellino" airport and the port of Palermo.
- Connection Bergamo – Orio al Serio Airport: awarded the contract for the design and construction of the new railway link between Bergamo station and Orio al Serio Airport. The value of the contract exceeds 113 million euros and is also financed with funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The connection, expected by the end of 2026, will reduce the travel time between the airport and the city of Bergamo to just 10 minutes, while also enhancing connections with Milan.
- Cagliari-Oristano electrification: awarded the contract for the design and construction of the electrification works of the Cagliari-Oristano railway line. The value of the contract is over 45 million euros and is also financed with the Development and Cohesion Fund. This project will involve the first phase of electrification of the railway infrastructure in Sardinia, bringing benefits in terms of environmental sustainability and improving train performance. The electrification will also be compatible with the new hybrid trains that are already running on the Sardinian network.
In addition, a tender worth 900 million euro for the works of maintenance extraordinary of railway infrastructure throughout the national territory. This is part of a broader investment plan of a total value of 3,5 billion euros implemented by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) for ordinary and extraordinary maintenance interventions during 2023.
Road network tenders
- Framework maintenance agreements: twenty calls for tenders for 295 million euros, concerning the installation of metal road barriers in the macro-areas of the North, Centre, South and Islands, with planned maintenance interventions in Emilia-Romagna, Marche, Piedmont, Tuscany and Umbria .
- Framework Agreements for engineering and architectural services and professional assignments: two tenders for 109,8 million euro, including project analysis services, planning and planning support, services of geognostic, geotechnical, geophysical investigations, chemical and biological analyses, surveys and structural investigations, as well as environmental monitoring services.
- Interventions on stretches under police stations: four tenders for 754,2 million euro, concerning works on sections such as the Adriatic multimodal corridor Maglie – Santa Maria di Leuca SS 275 itinerary, the state road 4 “Salaria” (“Valgarizia” tunnel), the state road 16 “Adriatica ” and the construction of the last mile connection of the Port of Ancona, and the Casalecchio del Reno railway junction on the “Porrettana” state road 64, Stralcio Sud.
- Earthquake program: five calls for tenders for a total value of 422 million euros concerning the definitive and executive design and the execution of works on various roads affected by seismic events, including the 260 "Picente" state road, the 210 "Amandola - Servigliano" state road , state road 4 “Salaria” (including the elimination of a railway level crossing), state road 81 “Piceno Aprutina” and state road 78 “Belforte del Chienti – Amandola”.
