2025 is shaping up to be a decisive year for Italian railway mobility, with the Italian FS Group engaged in completion of its infrastructure works more ambitious. Between the main construction sites include the Brescia-Verona-Padua AV/AC line, the Florence Passante AV and the Naples-Bari AV/AC line, with a total value of approximately 21 billion euros. These projects, which involve the two Group companies specialized in infrastructure works, Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and Italferr, will not only improve the efficiency of rail connections but will also contribute to a future of more sustainable, safe and connected mobility with the rest of Europe.
Brescia-Verona-Padova high-speed railway: a step towards the Mediterranean corridor
La new AV/AC line Brescia-Verona-Padova, 48 kilometers long, represents a fundamental component of the Mediterranean Corridor, which connects the south of the Iberian Peninsula to Eastern Europe. This railway line will cross two regions and three provinces, improving the connection between Northern Italy and the main European routes.
Among the notable works, the following stand out: galleries of Lonato del Garda, almost 8 kilometers long, and a series of viaducts, overpasses and artificial tunnels. The completion of this project, which is part of a European vision of development of the railway network, will ensure an improvement in the efficiency and competitiveness of transport, favoring a continuous flow of goods and passengers.
The Florence AV Passante: Sustainability and Innovation Under the City
Another large construction site of the FS Group is the Florence high-speed loop, innovative project which provides for the construction of an underground line composed of two parallel tunnels. The intervention will separate long-distance trains from regional ones, improving the regularity of circulation and increasing the capacity of the Florence railway hub.
Le Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM), Iris and Marika, are currently working to dig the tunnels. In particular, Iris has already completed 1,8 kilometers of the track to the north, while Marika has started excavating the tunnel towards the south. A distinctive aspect of the project is thecommitment to sustainability: the extracted soil is reused for the environmental recovery of the former Santa Barbara lignite mine, while the transport of the soil is done exclusively by freight trains to reduce the environmental impact.
The Passante AV of Florence also includes the new station of Florence Belfiore, located at a depth of approximately 25 metres, destined to become an important mobility hub with a total surface area of 45.000 square metres.
AV/AC Naples-Bari: railway network for Southern Italy
THEHigh Speed Naples-Bari It is one of the most relevant projects for the Southern Italy connection to the rest of Europe. With its 145 kilometres of line, the The project is part of the European TEN-T programme and will improve theintegration of railway infrastructures in Southern Italy, part of the Scandinavia-Mediterranean Corridor.
Once completed, the The journey between Naples and Bari will last only two hours, reducing the current travel times by about two hours. Furthermore, the connection between Rome and Bari will be significantly speeded, with a reduction in travel times from four to three hours. The project includes the construction of a new double-track line between Naples and Foggia, increasing rail traffic capacity and strengthening the interconnection of Southern Italy with the rest of the High Speed network.
The three works constitute a key element for the future of mobility both Italian and European. In addition to reducing travel times and improving service reliability, these projects are an expression of a concrete commitment to sustainable and low environmental impact mobility, capable of strengthening territorial connections and promoting balanced and long-lasting development.
