Before getting on board, the head of state also had the opportunity to briefly visit the historic presidential train of the State Railways which was stationed on the track alongside and was used after the Second World War by the heads of state and the highest institutional offices (the the last to use it was Carlo Azeglio Ciampi about twenty years ago).
"Apart from the discussion of beauty and antiquity, I prefer the new Frecciarossa 1000 because the old historic train of the Quirinale was for one person only, while the new one is for everyone" said the President. The president returned to Rome with the new train. President Mattarella, ministers Dario Franceschini and Graziano Del Rio, the prefect of Milan Francesco Paolo Tronca, the mayor of Milan Giuliano Pisapia accompanied him.
The Frecciarossa 1000, the first of the 50 ordered by Trenitalia, released from the factories of AnsaldoBreda and Bombardier with a special dedication to Pietro Mennea, departed from Milan Central Station at 13.30pm and arrived in Rome Termini at 16.25pm, thus completing the journey, without intermediate stops, in 2 hours and 55 minutes. The train, designed to reach a speed of 360 km per hour, will make it possible to travel from Milan to Rome (or vice versa) in two hours. Currently the maximum speed in this first phase will not exceed 300 km per hour.
