FrankenBierFest 2024: the Franconian craft beer festival in Rome

Rome is preparing to welcome a unique event for lovers of beer crafts and the German food and wine tradition. From the 12 14 April, the Villa Torlonia lemon house it will transform into the ideal place to immerse yourself in the authentic atmosphere of FrankenBierFest, now in its eighth edition and promoted by 'Publigiovane Eventi' and 'Ma che Siete Venuti a Fa'. The beer selection at the FrankenBierFest is entrusted to Manuele Colonna, a well-known expert on the Franconian brewing scene and a point of reference in the world of craft beers.

“To tell the truth, this year – explained Colonna – we focused on even smaller entities than usual, including some municipal breweries that produce beer only twice a year in systems from the beginning of the last century. We also came into contact with new beer projects that make the Franconian scene alive and which, while remaining traditional, bring a breath of innovation."

FrankenBierFest, three days to explore authentic Franconian beers and flavors

The FrankenBierFest is a journey into the heart of Franconia, a region in southern Germany famous for its beers with a rich and authentic taste. It boasts the highest density of breweries in the world, with over 300 brewing operations in the region. In Bamberg, considered the capital of German craft beer, there are over 10 breweries for just 70 thousand inhabitants. Here, the average per capita consumption is over 300 liters of beer per year, a figure that is astonishing compared to the approximately 30 liters of Italians.

Franconian beers boast centuries of tradition, with recipes passed down from generation to generation and jealously guarded secrets. Thanks to the BierKultur Project, promoted by Colonna, an expert connoisseur of the Franconian brewing scene and well-known Roman publican, these beers have finally arrived in Italy too.

During the festival, in addition to the extraordinary beers, it will be possible to taste typical Franconian dishes at the Gäststatte, the traditional inns. Frankfurter succulent, schnitzel with potato salad, Bretzel fragrant e apple strudel will delight the palates of visitors, following the authentic recipes of the region.

Among the beers for tasting, there will be: Rachbier, with their smoky aroma and particular wood malting, and the very rare Cellar beer, the “cellar beers” for their lagering in underground tunnels. These flat beers, with well-defined hops and a strong taste, are a true treasure of the Franconian brewing tradition.

For three days, the Limonaia of Villa Torlonia will be transformed into a corner of the Alps, where enthusiasts will be able to completely immerse themselves in a festive atmosphere and discover the beauties of Franconia and Bamberg. In addition to tastings and beers, it will be possible to visit a photographic exhibition which tells the most fascinating habits, customs and traditions of this region so rich in history and culture.
