France, Fillon investigated for family scandal

Another tile on the French presidential candidate François Fillon: the Republican leader, involved for weeks in the scandal of the fictitious hiring (with public money) of wives and children – the so-called Penelopegate, named after his wife – has now officially been entered in the register of suspects for this affair.

The accusation, according to the anticipation of the Canard Enchainé, is of “misappropriation of public funds”, in this case relating to notes on paid jobs for family members but with positions deemed fictitious. Fillon has always defended himself by arguing that the work of family members, his most trusted collaborators, was precious for his position as deputy at the Assemblée Nationale, and of great use for the party.

More and more uphill, therefore, his race to the Elysium: Fillon won the center-right primaries last November and for a few weeks the polls gave him the favorite to get to the ballot against Marine Le Pen. A position that would now seem to be occupied by the rising star Emmanuel Macron, liberal-progressive and former Minister of the Economy with Hollande.
