France: explosion in nuclear power station

The accident at the Flamanville nuclear power plant, in north-western France, "is over": this is what the local prefecture has announced.

This morning, Thursday, there was an explosion around 10.00 in the Flamanville nuclear power station, in northwestern France. According to the prefecture, there is no risk associated with nuclear power. Five people are "slightly intoxicated" after the explosion according to reports from emergency services on the spot, specifying that a reactor at the plant was "turned off as a precaution".

The explosion occurred in the engine room of the Flamanville nuclear power plant, where there are no radioactive elements. According to the authorities, there is therefore no atomic or contamination risk. Help has arrived in the area and a fire brigade operation is currently underway in the area. An explosion and a fire were reported by firefighters inside the plant, but outside the nuclear zone.
