France: 3 ministers leave the government

The resigning ministers of the French government rise to three. After the owner of the Defense, Sylvie Goulard, also the number one of Justice, François Bayrou, and the Minister for European Affairs, Marielle de Sarnez, they announced the step back.

The three are involved in the scandal over European funds to their party, MoDem, used to pay parliamentary assistants who also worked for the party in Paris, and not just in Brussels. The same accusation was made against Marine Le Pen of the Front National, who came under investigation shortly before the elections.

Bayrou, Goulard and de Sarnez, therefore, will not be part of the new executive which will arise from the reshuffle announced for today at 18,30 pm and which will be chaired by Édouard Philippe. The prime minister said he "respected" Bayrou's decision and therefore accepted the resignations of the three ministers.

The restructuring of the government comes following last Sunday's legislative elections which saw the triumph of "En marche", the party of new president Emmanuel Macron, which has its main ally in MoDem.
