Photography, Paris Photo: 209 exhibitors and many personal exhibitions

23rd edition of Paris Photo, the first international fair dedicated to photography, with 209 exhibitors for the Principal, Publishing, PRISMES and Curiosa sectors. In addition, a selection of 179 galleries and 33 publishers from 30 countries will present the best of photographic creation from 7 to 10 November 2019 at the Grand Palace in Paris.

This year Paris Photo hosts 35 new galleries in the main sector, of which 15: Hauser & Wirth (Zurich) presents a solo exhibition of the German artist August Sander, Dirimart (Istanbul) presents a group exhibition on the theme of portraiture includes works by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Isaac Julien, Shirin Neshat and Julien Rosefeldt. The Galería Elvira González (Madrid) presents a solo exhibition by the Spanish artist Chema Madoz. Fahey / Klein Gallery (Los Angeles) presents a solo exhibition of Dali protégé Steven Arnold, while Anne-Sarah Bénichou (Paris) and The Pill (Istanbul) galleries jointly present a group exhibition on political photography bringing together the work of Mathias Depardon, Decebal Scriba and Seton Smith.

Among these new entrants, several galleries have returned:
Air de Paris (Paris) with a show for two by Jean Painlevé and Bruno Serralongue, Dominique Fiat (Paris) with a group show on the vogue scene of the 90s in New York. The 2019 selection is also marked by the return of Filomena Soares (Lisbon) and Nicholas Metivier (Toronto).

29 solo exhibitions are offered this year by exhibitors from the main industry, including works on adolescence by Jim Goldberg (Casemore Kirkeby, San Francisco), experimental research on digital images by Adrian Sauer (Klemm's, Berlin) and by Nancy Burson (Paci, Brescia), nature and the environment as inspiration for Roberto Huracaya (Rolf Art, Buenos Aires) and Edward (Nicholas Metivier, Toronto), but also Paris and fashion with the works of Juergen Teller (Suzanne Tarasieve, Paris). Ming Smith (Jenkins Johnson, San Francisco) questions the idea of ​​homogeneity in American black photography, while Mari Katayama (Sage, Paris) sublimates her physical disability by placing it at the center of her creative process. American sculptor John Chamberlain (Karsten Greve, Paris) reveals his unique experimental practice of the Widelux camera with a series of elongated, wrinkled, strong images in contrasting colours.

The Curiosa sector, inaugurated in 2018, is dedicated this year to emerging artists. Guest of this second edition, Osei Bonsu – Anglo-Ghanaian curator and writer – has chosen to question photography and its instability in relation to our current world. This selection reflects the multitude of human realities, visible or hidden, in an innovative and inspired way.

The PRISMES sector, dedicated to the exhibition of exceptional works, is presented in the Hall of Honor of the Grand Palais. For this 5th edition, it hosts 14 projects, including large formats by Marie Cloquet (Annie Gentils, Antwerp) and Zohra Opoku (Mariane Ibrahim, Seattle), the serial works by Susan Derges (Purdy Hicks, London) and the SubREAL group
(Jecza, Timisoara) and the structures of Marianne Csáky (Inda, Budapest).

Presented at mk2 Grand Palais and accessible to all visitors of the fair, the third edition of the FILM sector questions the deep links between photography and animated images through films by artists and photographers. The selection defined by Matthieu Orléan (French Cinematheque collaborator) and Pascale Cassagnau (Head of Audiovisual, Video and New Media Collection, National Arts Center Plastics) explores image manipulation practices through a series of documentaries and works of fiction.
