Fornero: young people in the company can be an experiment

"The quotas for young people within companies I see at best as an experimental system, but I don't see them as a legal obligation". This was stated by the Minister of Labour, Elsa Fornero, in a press conference in Brussels at the end of the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumers Council (Epsco). Fornero specifies that "the quota system is not a good recruitment system, but Italy has already adopted it due to the presence of women on the boards of listed companies". This is because, Fornero says, "when a country resists certain things then drastic measures must be taken".

Fornero, therefore, does not like the use of certain solutions – such as quotas – especially if imposed. “I am more in favor of intervening with more incentives and less with obligations and prohibitions”. However, the Minister of Labor does not rule out the possibility of introducing quotas for young workers, perhaps in the future. "I see it possible at best if used in an experimental way, but I don't see them as required by law". For now, at least. "The job market is made up of many things and we need to work on several fronts", better if "in parallel". In this sense, concludes Fornero, "we will also discuss article 18, but now it is not the priority".
