Mediaset insatiable: after stealing the Champions League from Sky for the three-year period 2015-18, the Biscione also wants the rights to Serie A, on which Sky is currently ahead. The Cologno Monzese group has prepared an alternative move worth over 850 million a year to secure the licenses for all matches in digital mode.
In fact, last 5 June, the Italian group received two envelopes from the Italian group containing alternative offers for package B, ie the one concerning 248 matches of the best Serie A teams for digital terrestrial television. The first, which has already emerged in the rumors of recent days, amounts to 280 million and has been surpassed by the 420 million put on the plate by Sky and the 400 million by Fox Sports.
The second has so far remained top secret and is ready to take action in the event that – as indeed could happen after the chaos of these days – there is an impasse in the award that leads the Football League to award the satellite matches: 548 million for matches of the big names in Serie A to which must be added the 306 million proposed for the 132 matches of the minor teams. In practice, Mediaset would bet on Serie A 854 million, a record figure.
