“A disturbing cross-section emerges: an instrumental use of a company like Fonsai, where it appears to have been bent to the interest of a part of the shareholder base. The effect was loss of credibility and betrayal of small shareholders”. This was stated by Turin's assistant prosecutor Vittorio Nessi, speaking of the investigation by the Turin prosecutor's office, which led to 7 arrests, including Salvatore Ligresti and his three children, Jonella, Giulia and Paolo.

Nessi also explained that the Turin prosecutor's office decided to proceed to avoid the risk of absconding, but also due to the risk of repeating the crime and tampering with the evidence. The hypotheses of crime on which the prosecutor has investigated are in fact aggravated false accounting and market manipulation. According to investigators, the top management of Fondiaria Sai allegedly concealed from the market a "hole" in the claims reserve of around 600 million. Sensitive information, therefore, the failure to communicate which caused serious damage to at least 12 savers.
