Fondazione Prada presents The New American Cinema Turin 1967

A film review curated by Germano Celant "The New American Cinema Turin 1967" reconstructs "New American Cinema Group Exposition", the festival organized in Turin in 1967 and dedicated to the group of young avant-garde filmmakers gathered under the acronym NACG (New American Cinema group).

Fifty years later, Fondazione Prada will be offering the public almost all of the films presented in Turin in 1 from 30 to 2017 April 1967.

Saturday April 1th, on the occasion of the launch of the festival, the Cinema of the Foundation in Milan will host the following events:

18.30 pm – Round table hosted by Germano Celant, in conversation with Adriano Aprà, Tonino De Bernardi, Pia De Silvestris Vergine and Ugo Nespolo, dedicated to reconstructing the cultural climate in Turin in 1967 during the “New American Cinema Group Exposition” review.

20 pm – screening of the film “The Brig” (1964) by Jonas and Adolfas Mekas (in original language, without subtitles).

Both events are free, subject to availability. Tickets can be collected on Saturday at the Foundation ticket office up to 15 minutes before the chosen event.

The Turin review was conceived by Jonas Mekas, theorist and supporter since 1955 of an artistic conception of cinema and creator of "rough, poorly packaged, but alive" films. It was promoted by the Cultural Union of Turin, directed by the critic Edoardo Fadini.

Officially born in 1960 in New York, the New American Cinema Group originally brought together 23 independent filmmakers who produced low-budget short and feature films with controversial and denunciatory content. Characterized by an anti-narrative approach and an experimental style, their films subverted traditional cinematic codes, thanks to the use of found footage or the manipulation of film.

During the course of the festival there will also be a series of meetings and conversations with some of the protagonists of the New American Cinema movement such as Pola Chapelle (Friday 7 April), Ira Schneider (Friday 21 April) and Peter Kubelka (Friday 28 April).
