IMF: Italy should redouble its efforts

The new director Lagarde is asking for a penalty supplement from Italy: a difficult moment, he says, but the economic parameters are solid. It is more necessary than ever, according to the IMF, to achieve the target of 3% in the deficit-GDP ratio.

Password: growth. This is the exhortation to Italy by Chrsitine Lagarde, new director of the IMF. In particular, greater efforts are needed to improve the tax system and revitalize the economy, according to the head of the International Monetary Fund.

And while Italy's economic data is solid, Lagarde says, the country is currently "going through a difficult period, essentially under pressure from the market." Therefore, efforts are all the more necessary in view of the consolidation of finances and the achievement, in 2012, of the 3% deficit-GDP objective.
