Barring last-minute twists, the agreement between the Five Stars and the Democratic Party for the birth of the Conte bis government is approaching. Government: Five Stars and Pd towards the agreement for the Conte bis

The white smoke for the birth of the Five Star-PD government with Giuseppe Conte still Prime Minister seems to be approaching. The evening summit at Palazzo Chigi between the Conte himself, the secretary of the Democratic Party, Nicola Zingaretti and the political leader of the Five Stars, Luigi Di Maio, however, failed to close the games and will have to have a follow-up on Tuesday morning in view of the consultations that restart at the Quirinale.

Zingaretti, overcoming the initial rigidities, has convinced himself that the Five Star-Pd government alliance has no real alternatives except to go to early elections and that in order to give birth to it, the way to the Conte presidency cannot be blocked, claimed from the first hour from Five Stars. And so it should be. "I'm optimistic," said Zingaretti after a quick first meeting with Di Maio in the afternoon.

But, after obtaining Conte's confirmation, the Five Stars - or at least Di Maio who plays an entirely personal game to remain deputy prime minister - have raised the bar by asking for very important dicasteries, starting from Foreign Affairs and the Interior, which initially they seemed intended for Paolo Gentiloni and Marco Minniti. in place of Matteo Salvini at the Interior Ministry. In addition to blocking Bonafede from Justice and Fraccaro from institutional reforms, Di Maio also asked (but did not obtain) the new European Commissioner.

But the Democratic Party, while yielding on the appointment of the premier - who has been supported by international chancelleries, Europe and the Italian establishment and who also reassures the Quirinale - hopes to bring about a change in terms of content, starting from the abolition of the disputed two Salvini decrees on security, by a budget maneuver oriented towards development and the defense of the environment - also supported by the OECD - and by the electoral reform in a more proportional sense in which the cut in MPs.

Consultations at the Quirinale will resume on Tuesday and will end in the late afternoon of Wednesday with the visit of the main political forces to the Head of State who, barring twists and turns, should give Giuseppe Conte the new task of forming his second government. Obviously, the opposition of the League of Salvini and the Brothers of Italy of Meloni is expected to be very tough. But in Parliament the numbers are on the side of the Five Stars and the Democratic Party, which should also be supported by Leu.
