US taxman: Credit Suisse under accusation

The US fight against tax evasion continues. After UBS, another large Swiss bank investigated.

US taxman: Credit Suisse under accusation

The investigation by the US Department of Justice concerns private banking services offered to US citizens. The bank announced yesterday that it received notification of the investigation that sees it among the suspects and has declared that it intends to continue to collaborate with the US authorities to resolve these issues. Already last February, the US had accused four bank officials, suspected of helping American customers to evade taxes by hiding funds in secret bank accounts. At the time, however, the investigation had not ended with any formal indictment.

The case comes after the 2009 investigation against UBS, a compatriot bank of Credit Suisse, also accused of facilitating tax evasion by US citizens. UBS was then fined $780 million and ordered, in derogation of Swiss banking secrecy, to provide the US government with the data of more than 4 customers.
