First Cisl, the new banking union

"Expand representation in order to make the greatest possible contribution to the construction of shared solutions with all the other players in the trade union, employer, political and economic scenario". This is one of the key steps of the intervention Giulio Romani general secretary of First Cisl, a new union in the financial and credit sector born from the union of Fiba Cisl and Dircredito and presented today in Rome at The Church Palace.

Secretary Romani explained that today the time is ripe to “experiment ways of sharing the governance of processes and corporate governance. The workers – Romani explained – accept that a part of their contribution is remunerated based on company performance, but they claim to be able to contribute with their own contribution of intelligence and competence to determine the choices of which they will still have to suffer and manage the repercussions" .

As for the union situation within the credit sector, secretary Romani discussed the federative hypotheses by retracing the model of the old FLB. Romani underlined how the idea of a unitary trade union federation, which starts from the confederal organizations, is a hypothesis on which to discuss. But Romani and all the actors present in the room are keen to clarify that the idea is very different from the type of 'single union' hypothesized a few days ago by Renzi: not a union at the service of the Government or of those who manage it but a unit of strategies to be achieved with the confrontation between the unions themselves.

Another extremely topical issue is that relating to banks and in particular to bank contract. When asked what was the main victory of the trade unions in the difficult negotiation with Abi, secretary Romani has no doubts: the occupational protection with the establishment of the platform which aims to bring together job supply and demand in companies in the sector and also the reduction of the entry salary penalty for new hires which has gone from 18 to 10%.

Once the renewal of the Abi contract has been filed, a new challenge is at the door for the unions that will put the sector to the test once again: the bank merger season. The First Cisl assistant secretary Maurizio Arena wanted to dwell on this point, explaining that “the financial and economic crisis has profoundly changed the scenario and we are all aware that a further profound restructuring of the organizational and distribution processes of the banks is upon us. In this scenario – added Arena – we have identified the reasons for FIRST. Starting from shared values and a strong need for change, we intend to anticipate to face the future, better structured, stronger and always and only in the interest of workers and professional peculiarities”.
