Fincantieri-Intesa Sanpaolo: 500 million euro sustainability-linked loan for cruise ships

Fincantieri e Intesa Sanpaolo together to build more cruise ships from a green perspective. The shipbuilding complex signed a sustainability-linked revolving credit facility with the IMI Corporate & Investment Banking Division of the group led by Carlo Messina for a maximum amount of 500 million euro. This can be read in a joint note, in which Fincantieri and Intesa explain that the three-year fund "is dedicated to covering the financial needs associated with the construction of more cruise ships".

It is defined as sustainability linked since it is linked to the achievement of two specific performance indicators (i.e. Key Performance Indicators, "KPI"): the level of the sustainability attributed annually through the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) questionnaire by S&P Global and the energy efficiency of cruise ships delivered each year (EEDI Index).

The announcement comes shortly the beginning of the collaboration with Explore Journeys, the luxury travel brand of the MSC Group's cruise division, for the construction of two new generation hydrogen-powered luxury cruise ships, thus bringing the total fleet number from four to six units. The two new buildings will enter service in 2027 and 2028, respectively.
