The Italian group will build the bow sections of the 4 LSSs for the French Navy based on the "Vulcano" ship project.

Fincantieri, contract with French Navy for 4 ships

Fincantieri obtains an important order in France: the temporary consortium formed by Chantiers de l'Atlantique and Naval Group has entrusted it, as part of the Franco-Italian LSS program led by OCCAR (Organization for Joint Armament Cooperation), the construction of the bow sections of four logistic support vessels of the French Navy, along the lines of what has already been done with the project of the Italian unit “Vulcano”. The sections will be built in the Castellammare di Stabia shipyard, as for the ship "Vulcano", with deliveries scheduled between 2021 and 2027.

The contract, the amount of which is not indicated in the press release, is part of the FLOTLOG program ("Flotte logistique"), which envisages the construction of four logistic support vessels (LSS) for the French Navy by the temporary consortium formed by Chantiers de l'Atlantique and Naval Group, as part of the Franco-Italian LSS program on behalf of DGA, the French Directorate General for Armaments, and its Italian counterpart NAVARM. In this context, Chantiers de l'Atlantique and Naval Group have therefore agreed to entrust the Trieste-based group, capable of building over 7.000 in its history and which generates an associated industry that employs almost 50.000 people in Italy alone, with the construction of the bow sections for the four units.

The LSS project, like that of the other units of the multi-year program for the renewal of the Italian Navy fleet, is characterized by a very high level of innovation which makes the vessel extremely flexible in the different usage profiles with a high degree of efficiency. The LSS combines the ability to transport and transfer liquid cargo (diesel, aviation fuel, fresh water) and solid cargo (spare parts, food and ammunition) to other naval units.
