Philippines, the government calls on new lawyers to fight tax evasion

Philippine Finance Minister Cesar V. Purisima called on the new lawyers to help fight tax evasion among freelancers and among lawyers themselves. "I hope you start your new career - said Purisima in a statement on the occasion of the results of the state exams - promising to pay the right amount of taxes and not helping your customers to evade them".

The declaration came at a time when the Department of Revenue, which depends on the Ministry of Finance, is launching an awareness campaign aimed at freelancers. The Bureau has also launched an operation to monitor the sector. Purisima revealed that revenue from freelancers was just 8 percent of total revenue in 2009, with projections for 2012 of a paltry and unrealistic 6,8 percent.
