Martina Franca towards digitization. Open Fiber has started the works for the construction of a telecommunications network entirely in optical fiber, a cutting-edge infrastructure capable of ensuring ultra-fast navigation to Apulian citizens and businesses that will allow them to navigate at up to 10 Gigabits per second (10 megabits) and a latency of less than 5 milliseconds, in FTTH mode (Fiber To The Home, i.e. the optical fiber right into the house). Overall, over 10 thousand kilometers of fiber optic cables will be laid, with the works expected to be completed within 18 months.

The company led by the CEO Elisabetta Ripa has planned an investment of approx 6 million euro of own funds, in order to wire approx 16 thousand real estate units. The project involves the reuse of existing infrastructures, in order to limit the impact and any inconvenience to the community as much as possible. As in construction sites open throughout Italy, the excavations will be carried out favoring innovative methods with low environmental impact.

Among these the most used is the minitrench: the excavation on the road, 10 centimeters wide and 35 to 50 centimeters deep, is filled together with the laying of the cables with pink cement mortar. At least 30 days after the temporary restoration (technical time necessary for the material to settle), the intervention is defined with the scarification of the roadway concerned and the laying of the hot asphalt. The two phases, temporary and definitive restoration, are always the result of coordination between Open Fiber and the competent municipal offices. The intervention of digitization, from the excavations to the resurfacing and up to the connections within the real estate units requested by the users, is entirely paid for by the company and does not envisage any disbursement of public money.

Furthermore, the citizens of Martina Franca will be able to navigate on the new fiber optic network already after the summer, as soon as the partner operators open up the sale of ultrabroadband connectivity services.
