Milan ever faster. In the Lombard capital, Open Fiber and the operator Fibra.City have tested a new broadband access service XGS-PON (10Giga symmetrical), through which an access speed of up to 10Gbps has been achieved.
“It is the first time in Italy that an experiment on this new FTTH access technology has been conducted on a commercial network,” Open Fiber explains in a note.
Going into details, the XGS-PON broadband service reuses the optical network infrastructure developed by the company for the GPON service, exploiting both the downstream and upstream fiber capacity.
“To download a 4GByte 50k game it takes 2 hours with a connection to 50Mbps, while with a connection from 10Gbps it only takes 40 seconds”, exemplifies the company controlled by Enel and Cdp.
“Breaking down the Gigabit per second wall on a commercial network is a source of great pride for us – he underlines Elisabetta Ripa, CEO of Open Fiber – because we are achieving a new important record in broadband trials on the Italian market. This milestone demonstrates once again that our FTTH (Fiber To The Home) technology is "future proof", and will be the protagonist of digital development in the coming years, enabling services that need to exploit high bandwidth, such as video Ultra HD 4K/8K, cloud gaming, virtual and augmented reality, telemedicine, the Massive Internet of Things and autonomous driving”.
