fibercop accelerate on optical fiber in Calabria with a investment overall about 742 million euro, of which 519 million from the PNRR and 223 million from direct resources of Fibercop itself. This intervention, which is part of Lots 5 and 11 of the national cabling program, aims to guarantee ultra-fast connections throughout the region.
Fibercop boosts connectivity in Calabria
The plan of the fiber optic infrastructure company, which is part of the “Piano Italia 1 Giga”, aims to improve the Browsing speed up to 1 Gigabit per second, enabling a wide range of digital services, including smart working, high-definition streaming, telemedicine and smart city technologies, such as traffic management, public lighting and environmental monitoring.
At the moment, Fibercop has started the works in 294 municipalities of Calabria, with a provincial distribution that includes 71 municipalities in Catanzaro, 113 in Cosenza, 18 in Crotone, 54 in Reggio Calabria and 38 in Vibo Valentia. So far 190.662 civic numbers have been wired, but the goal is to cover the entire plan by 2026.
The project is not only about the network, but also has an impact on thelocal employment. About 1.000 workers from local businesses are involved in the construction sites, and the company employs about 600 people in Calabria. In addition, the 560 telephone exchanges in the region are the starting point for the distribution of optical fiber.
An investment that looks to the future
Fibercop does not stop at Calabria: it has in fact announced a plan for investments da 1,4 billion euros to accelerate the development of the fiber optic network throughout the country. The goal is to complete the cabling in all Italian regions, including Calabria, in line with the national strategy for Ultra Wide Band. As part of this strategy, FiberCop has won 7 Lots of the “Piano Italia 1 Giga” tender, which will involve 10 Italian regions, including the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano, thus consolidating its central role in the national digital infrastructure landscape.
