Republic Day, Napolitano: "Defend a united Europe"

“The European states, which a century ago fought each other with fierce fury, are today united under the same banner”. This is the heart of Giorgio Napolitano's speech during the celebration, once again under the banner of sobriety, of the anniversary of the Italian Republic. A pro-European message, in difficult times for the union: "In the name of common values of freedom, justice and equality, (European states) pursue prosperity together, along an indispensable path of economic, political and institutional integration".

“Even for Europe, peace is not a definitively acquired good – continued Napolitano -. This is demonstrated by the escalation of serious sources of tension close to the borders of the Union and the necessary, constant commitment of the international community in crisis management and in the fight against terrorism and organized crime. In the world of economic competition and globalization, the military instruments of democratic countries are called upon to perform vital tasks of deterrence, prevention and protection for the safety of citizens and for the protection of legality”.

“On Republic Day – concluded Napolitano -, may all of you, soldiers, sailors, airmen, carabinieri and financiers, of every order and rank, receive the consideration and gratitude of the Italians and a very fervent wish. Long live the Armed Forces, long live the Republic, long live Italy!”.

At the ceremony at the altar of the homeland, where the head of state placed a laurel wreath on the unknown soldier, there were also Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti and the presidents of the Senate and Chamber, Piero Grasso and Laura Boldrini, who has promised that the two marines detained in India will be brought home.
