Ferrari: Raikkonen leaves the young Leclerc in his place

The best was not enough Monza Grand Prix, in which he almost saved the Ferrari race by remedying Vettel's bad start and even risking winning: Kimi Raikkonen, last world champion riding a Red (it was 2007, then Massa, Alonso and, so far, failed in the series , Vettel), leaves the Maranello house after a total of 8 seasons, from 2007 to 2009 and from 2014 to 2018. The 38-year-old Finnish driver will go to Sauber for two seasons, where he will probably end his very long career, which began in 2001 with the Swiss team.

The team principal of the redhead, Maurizio Arrivabene, announced the separation between Ferrari and Raikkonen with this press release: “Scuderia Ferrari announces that, at the end of the 2018 season, Kimi Raikkonen will leave his current role. During these years, Kimi has made a fundamental contribution to the team, both as a pilot and for his human qualities. His role has been decisive for the growth of the team and, at the same time, he has always been a great team man. As world champion, he will always remain in the history and in the Scuderia family. For all this we thank him and wish him and his family a future full of satisfactions”.

Raikkonen has so far competed in 287 GPs, won 20 and reached the podium 100 times. He also scored 18 pole positions and in his driving career he also raced in rallies and in the Nascar world championship. Now only the announcement of the arrival of the Monegasque Charles Leclerc is awaited, 20-year-old product of the Ferrari Driver Academy, already winner of the F.3 and F.2 title and launched this year in F.1 with the Alfa Romeo-Sauber that uses the Cavallino power units, as Sebastian's teammate Vettel from next season. A choice clearly projected into the future, in the hope, however, of bringing the title back to Maranello as soon as possible, perhaps as early as this season.
