FederlegnoArredo 2021: record turnover and sales but the uncertainty of 2022 risks reversing the trend

According to the preliminary results of FederlegnoArredo, the supply chain is growing by double digits compared to 2019. But expensive raw materials, energy and the Ukrainian crisis risk reversing the trend

FederlegnoArredo 2021: record turnover and sales but the uncertainty of 2022 risks reversing the trend

With a sensational 14% increase for 2021, on the already brilliant pre-pandemic results of 2019, the FederlegnoArredo supply chain opens the record ranking of Italian manufactures of the home system, closing the year just ended with a production turnover of almost 50 billion euros, having largely exceeded 49, compared to 43 billion in 2019. With excellent performance of the domestic market (+18,5% on 2019 ) higher than sales abroad.

The detailed pre-finals elaborated and disclosed today by the Federation's Study Center provide surprising data regarding the export which scores a +7,3% on 2019 for a value of over 18 billion euros which exceeds, albeit slightly, the 17 of 2019, consolidating a recovery in exports which account for over 37% of the entire sector .

If these data are combined - underlines the Study Center - with those of 2020, the change is even more substantial: +20,6%. Particularly positive results also because they arrived without the promotional factors of Italian and international trade fairs (where Made in Italy has been the main attraction for decades) and with the repeated heavy slowdowns in world transport. However, no one is hiding in the circles of FederlegnoArredo that the expensive raw materials and energy price increases together with the Russian crisis could slow down the prolonged sprint of the FederlegnoArredo supply chain.

Feltrin (FederlegnoArredo): “2021 is doing very well, but the uncertainty of the Ukrainian crisis weighs heavily”

"Going from -9,1% in 2020 over 2019 to +25,7% in 2021 over 2020 to reach the double-digit result of 2021 is undoubtedly a prestigious achievement - he comments Claudio Feltrin, president of FederlegnoArredo – which certifies how wood-furniture companies have been able to respond, better than others, to the crisis of the last two years. And they did so by continuing to invest and innovate, interpreting the health, social and economic drama that has hit the whole world in a constructive and positive spirit. Despite this - now the state of criticality and strong uncertainty prevails due to the economic situation in the first months of 2022. We are faced with a mix that really risks putting the handbrake on the recovery of the sector and we must know how to keep growth at levels of 2021, trusting that, as soon as possible, the serene will return ".

The contract sector weighed down by the declines in tourism and mobility

The living areas, semi-finished products for construction, veneers, various and sawn panels of softwoods and temperate hardwoods have stood out for their dynamism on the domestic and world markets – according to the in-depth analyzes of the Centro Studi. On the contrary, it is the contract sector which, weighed down for two years now by the global declines in tourism, has suffered the most consistent and prolonged damage. "The contract, in fact, will have to wait at least until 2023 if not 2024, to return to pre-covid levels, even if some glimmers were beginning to show, but unfortunately it is still very weak - comments the president Feltrin - The sector follows dynamics and programming very different from the market destined for home furnishings and those who work for hotels, cruises and commercial chains continue to deal with a slowdown in orders. Partly offsetting this dynamic is the outdoors, which has given a strong boost to the demand for outdoor furniture and fittings, both from families and from bars and restaurants, thanks also to the free concession of stalls.
