Federer is a legend: his 18th Grand Slam

The Swiss, 35 years old and returning after a six-month break, won his fifth Australian Open by overcoming his lifelong rival Rafael Nadal in an epic final: for Federer it was the 100th match in Melbourne and the 28th final in a major.

Federer is a legend: his 18th Grand Slam

And I'm 18! The Swiss Roger Federer rewrites the history of tennis, of which he is already a legend: he returns after 6 months of inactivity and at almost 36 years old, an unthinkable age to still compete at certain levels after a career like his, he wins the his 18th Grand Slam title after yet another epic final with Rafael Nadal, his all-time rival. However, if the Spaniard was up to now with a large advantage in direct matches (especially in major tournaments), this time fate gave something back to the Swiss, in the 28th Slam final of his career, with 10 defeats, 6 of which against the Majorcan.

For Federer it is the fifth victory at the Australian Open (he surpasses Agassi and moves to a success from Djokovic's 6), on a Sunday that will be remembered for a long time by all tennis fans: the most awaited, most coveted Grand Slam, given that after so many triumphs one after another, the Swiss champion hadn't won a major tournament since Wimbledon in 2012. Four and a half years with three other finals lost, all against Novak Djokovic between London and New York. But today, January 29, 2017, was Federer's day, granting military honors to the revived Nadal, who was also out of action for some time and returning to a Grand Slam final from Roland Garros in 2014 (won against Djokovic).

Naturally, in addition to improving his record of won Grand Slams (from 17 to 18, with Nadal still at 14), Federer played his 100th match in Melbourne when he played the final, with 87 wins and 13 losses. An absolute record, yet another, and this time with the happy ending of the final victory against a bewitched opponent, against whom he has lost two thirds of direct matches in his career.
