FCA unveils Portal, the 100% electric and semi-automatic pilot car

It's called Portal and it's the revolutionary car that FCA, through its Chrysler brand, has conceived, designed and engineered for a new generation of users, that of Millennial families. Completely new in terms of form – it is an elegant and modern six-seater minivan – Portal also opens up new paths in terms of propulsion, as it is a a 100% electric vehicle with quick charge and extended autonomy, and of the methods of use, given that it is capable of moving semi-autonomously without driver intervention. The new jewel of the FCA group was unveiled at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas.

According to the Detroit News, which like other American sites anticipated the press conference, this car – that it is present, it should be remembered, at the CES in Las Vegas as a concept and not as a model of imminent production -, it has front-wheel drive, electric propulsion with an autonomy of 400 km and the possibility of quick charging in less than 20 minutes. And above all there is a complex system of sensors and computers that ensures semi-autonomous driving: Detroit News explains that Portal is designed for level three Autonomous Drive, what provides for control of the road and the surrounding environment by of man even if he does not touch the controls.

To this end, the concept is equipped with Lidar and Sonar sensors plus cameras that have been elegantly inserted into the bodywork, without the protuberances that characterize the experimental models seen to date. A hardware that is also the starting point for a possible upgrade up to level five, the one related to fully autonomous driving. Among the novelties present in the revolutionary Portal a camera that monitors the driver, through facial recognition, to check for any moments of distraction or drowsiness, and also a super-evolved version of the on-board infotainment that also allows dialogue with one's home, through the IoT, to monitor safety, energy consumption, heating and other parameters available in the 'connected homes' of families Millennials.
