The Foreign Ministry in 2016 was the victim of a hacker attack. This was reported by the British newspaper The Guardian which, citing two sources close to the matter, speaks of suspicions that the hackers acted on a mandate from the "Russian state".

An Italian government source, answering questions from the newspaper, confirmed the attack, specifying however that Premier Paolo Gentiloni, head of the Farnesina at the time, was not among those affected, also because, according to the source, ""he avoided using emails when he was Foreign Minister”.

Furthermore, according to the information, the hackers would not have been able to steal sensitive or classified data. The Rome prosecutor's office is allegedly investigating the hack.
