He passed away at the age of 96 Emmanuel Macaluso, historic leader of the PCI. Born in Caltanissetta on 21 March 1924, he was a parliamentarian from 1963 to 1992 and director of theUnit from 1982 to 1986. In the Communist Party he was part of the so-called "improvement" current together with Giorgio Napolitano, of whom he was a close friend throughout his life.
His membership in the PCI took place before the fall of Fascism: it was 1941 and Macaluso was 15 years old. Ten years later he began his career as a Sicilian regional deputy. He was for a long time a member of the governing bodies of the Party, including the secretariat of Enrico Berlinguer. After the Bolognina breakthrough, he joined the PDS. Among the various positions held, he was also the last director of the Reformist, from 2011 to 2012.
And he really was a reformer, throughout his life, engaging in various political struggles: from that of the 2016s for the survival of laborers in the Sicilian countryside to that in favor of the constitutional reform of XNUMX.
We remember it with the interview he granted us last September to explain the reasons for his no to the referendum on cutting the number of MPs.
