Farage: surprise resignation as UKIP leader

Sensational step backwards by the British politician who more than any other had emerged victorious from the Brexit referendum: "I have now achieved my goal, I want my life back".

Farage: surprise resignation as UKIP leader

Yet another twist in British politics: Nigel Farage, leader of UKIP, has resigned from leadership of the party. A very unexpected step backwards, given that the number one of the British Eurosceptics was undoubtedly the great winner of the Brexit referendum.

“I will continue to support the independence movements throughout Europe – Farage said at the press conference -, but I have now achieved my goal. I never wanted to be a professional politician. Now I want my life back."

Farage then asked for a new prime minister to be appointed immediately to replace the outgoing David Cameron, "for the good of the country".

In recent days, the now former UKIP leader had been the protagonist of a clash with the president of the Commission, Jean Claude Juncker, who said he was surprised at the permanence of the Eurosceptic in the Strasbourg assembly. Farage then delivered a very polemical speech in the European Parliament, receiving waves of boos from fellow MEPs.

Later, Farage found himself in great embarrassment during a television interview, pressed by questions from a reporter about promises made during the election campaign.

At the center of the discord above all the elusive 350 million pounds a week that during the electoral campaign the Eurosceptics had promised to divert from Brussels to the coffers of the British health system, a promise immediately retracted after the victory in the referendum.

Farage's resignation comes after the (expected) resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron and the (surprise) step back of the candidate in pectore for leadership Boris Johnson. For the moment, Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn is resisting, despite the frond against him by a large part of the deputies due to the weakness of the campaign against Brexit.
