Will Facebook and Instagram become paid? Only for the verification "blue ticks": here is how much the service costs

Facebook e Instagram they become a payment? Only for those who want to use the blue check verification for the two social networks. The parent company, Meta, has announced a subscription service called Goal Verified, which will allow users to "verify" their identity on the two platforms in exchange for a monthly fee of up to $15. The tests of the service will begin first in New Zealand and Australia, but then it should become a paid service in other countries as well. News that has not shaken investors: Monday 20 February the title of the former Facebook (Nasdaq) closed up 4,1% at 166,74 dollars.

This comes after another social media platform, Twitter, started charging a premium subscription to TwitterBlue, which offers subscribers blue ticks for about $8 a month (11 for iOS), putting an end to the era of free social networks. The only difference between Meta and Twitter's approach is that the latter service doesn't use an ID to verify its users. But let's see in detail how the new service works.

Meta Verified: how much it costs and how the blue check works

Meta Verified is a subscription service that allows you to verify your account with a identity card government (very similar to our SPID), to obtain a blue badge, to get additional protection against identity theft and to have direct access to customer support (but only for account problems). “We'll put you in touch with a real person whenever you have an issue with your account,” Meta explains. In addition, with the new service you get more visibility in search, comments and recommendations and exclusive functions "to express yourself in a unique way". At launch, the service will have a starting cost of dollars 11,99 per month on websites o dollars 14,99 per month on iOS. Therefore, to have the famous blue check you will have to pay.

If you are registered with both Instagram and Facebook, you will need to pay for a single subscription to get the blue checks on both platforms. Instead, those who already have a verified profile will be able to keep it without paying.

Three are required for registration requirements: be at least 18 years old, have an active profile in the last few months and finally an official identity document with a photo that matches that of the profile.

Paid blue ticks for Facebook and Instagram: why?

This move by Meta aims to counter various problems, first of all the need to "make cash". After the precipitous drop in share value in 2022 ei mass layoffs in 2023 (and more are expected on the horizon), Meta had to run for cover to try to cope with the huge loss-making investments made in Metaverse. In addition, the platform – like many others – has been hit by strictures standards on privacy of Apple on iOS (Tracking Transparency) that according to a CNBC report dated February 3, 2022, the Zuckerberg-led company had an impact of at least $10 billion in 2022, about 8% of its total revenue in 2021.

But not just for profit. Meta's choice also reflects the difficulties the company is facing with unauthenticated accounts. Meta Verified "serves to strengthen the authenticity and security of our services," he said explained CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
