Extra-EU exports: energy is king, sales +37% and purchases +14,6%

The energy deficit goes from 2.901 million to 8.862 million. Good sales in the USA and Opec countries (+19,0%), Turkey (+14,7%), UK (+13,6%) and Switzerland (+11,2%)

For last April i Istat data report, regarding thecommercial exchange with non-EU countries, a cyclical increase for both flows, but larger for the imports (+6,4%) compared to sales (+1,9%). The increase on a monthly basis in exports concerned all the main groupings of industries, with the exception of intermediate goods (-2,4%), and was above all due to the increase in sales of energy sources (+37,0%). Also on the side of imports, the cyclical growth was mainly determined by energy purchases (+14,6%). Imports of capital goods (+4,0%) and intermediate goods (+3,3%) also increased, while those of durable (-9,8%) and non-durable (-0,4%) consumer goods decreased .

Exports in April it grew on an annual basis of 11,8%. It is not surprising that the increase, extended to all groupings with the exception of capital goods (-1,7%), was particularly accentuated for the energy sector (+134,8%). Imports recorded a more intense tendential growth (+59,3%), very high for energy goods (+193,8%).

Il trade deficit with non-EU countries amounted to 2.292 million, compared with a surplus of 4.858 million in the same month of 2021. The energy deficit it reached 8.862 million (it was equal to 2.901 million a year ago). And the surplus in the trade of non-energy products, albeit large, has shrunk: from 7.760 million in April 2021 to 6.570 million last month.

Despite this, there are year-on-year increases in the sales to most of the main non-EU partner countries; the largest concern the USA and Opec countries (+19,0% for both), Turkey (+14,7%), the United Kingdom (+13,6%) and Switzerland (+11,2%). In sharp decline sales to Russia (-48,4%), Japan (-17,0%) and China (-15,9%). At the same time, purchases from Russia (+118,8%) and OPEC countries (+109,6%) recorded trend increases much larger than the average.
