Expo 2015, 55 all'alba – Journey among the partners: the role of Enel and FCA

Milan continues to prepare for the Expo and anticipation for the event is growing: today there are exactly 55 days to go – Our journey among official partners continues: today it is Enel's turn, which has installed a network capable of supporting a load much higher than the average, and by FCA, which supplies the event with a fleet of cars.

Expo 2015, 55 all'alba – Journey among the partners: the role of Enel and FCA

There are only 56 days left before the inauguration of the 2015 Universal Expo in Milan, centered on the theme "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life". Work continues non-stop 24 hours a day: the risk of arriving unprepared for the deadline now seems to have been avoided. From May 24st to October 31st of this year, for six months, Milan and all of Italy will be a world showcase of what our country and the other 145 host countries are capable of conceiving and implementing to find suitable solutions for one of the most dramatic dilemmas of our times: how to guarantee healthy, safe and sufficient food for all peoples, while respecting the planet and its balance.

On 19 February we outlined the general profile of this extraordinary event. On March XNUMX, we launched with Accenture the presentation of the contributions that the eight are making to the success of the event official global partners of Expo 2015: Accenture, Enel, FCA, CNH, Intesa San Paolo, Samsung, Selex ES (Finmeccanica Group), Tim.

Each of the partners has collaborated since the beginning in the planning and realization of the event, bringing their own ideational, organizational and technological contribution. The 20 million visitors expected for Expo 2015 will thus be able to appreciate the level of technological innovation that each of the partners has achieved. The interaction between the most advanced technologies applied to every aspect of the Expo, as well as making the innumerable variations of the great theme proposed easily usable, will allow its temporary inhabitants to experience a day in what we can define as a possible city of the near future.

Enel's partnership

If Accenture with its advanced IT services represents the digital brain of the Expo city, Enel has created its nervous system. Expo, thanks to the partnership with Enel, will therefore be like a district of the future "smart city". According to forecasts, in 2030 the populations will live mostly in urban areas: le Smart grids they represent the basis for ensuring sustainable and efficient development of cities, enabling integrated management of the energy mix, distributed generation from renewable sources, grid controls, public lighting, storage systems and the electric vehicle charging network .

"For Expo 2015 - writes Enel in illustrating its participation in the event - we installed 75 MW of power managed by a closed-loop network made up of 100 underground medium voltage substations capable of calibrating loads to intelligently power and efficient the pavilions. Added to this are electrochemical energy storage systems (storage), A unicum in the panorama of energy innovation, which will make it possible to optimize local energy flows”. Furthermore, Enel has set up a public lighting network for Expo, made up of 8.500 LED light points which, together with that of the pavilions themselves, allow for a 36% reduction in consumption. Enel offers exhibiting countries a catalog of modular services, to satisfy every need and measure the carbon footprint of each pavilion.

La smart grid of Enel, developed together with the technological partner Siemens, will control the entire system and the 100 recharging points for electric cars (30 on the perimeter of the site and 70 external), while the fiber optic broadband will allow the network to be monitored at all times from the control center, operational 24 hours a day. Nello showroom built in the Enel Pavilion, visitors will be able to see how the smart grid of Expo 2015 was created and how it works. And how the smart city created for the universal exposition can be a support platform for the development of smart cities of the future, to be built based on sustainability and efficiency objectives, to provide quality services to citizens, optimizing consumption and reducing waste.

Enel is one of the largest energy multinationals in the world, with approximately 70.000 employees in 32 countries on 4 continents, a turnover of 75,8 billion euros, and an Ebitda (gross operating margin) of 15,7 billion euros (data preliminary consolidated financial statements 2014). Born from the nationalization of hundreds of small and large private electricity companies in 1962, it has been listed on the Stock Exchange since 1999. Today the Treasury controls about 30%, with plans to sell a further 5% to the market. It has a net installed capacity of over 95 GW and distributes electricity and gas over a network of around 1,9 million kilometres. In Europe, with 61 million users worldwide, Enel is the Group with the largest customer base.

The FCA Group partnership

Among the EXPO partners, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, through the group's automotive brands, and CNH Industrial, through the agricultural brand New Holland Agriculture, could not be missing.

"Giving people freedom of movement while respecting the environment and the surrounding community - says FCA in motivating its participation in the Expo - is the challenge that our Group intends to face: with cutting-edge technologies that reduce consumption and emissions of vehicles during their use on the road, the use of alternative fuels, the continuous improvement of the efficiency of conventional engines, dedicated software to encourage a conscious and environmentally friendly driving style and the promotion of new mobility solutions, such as The car sharing".

Since 2013, and until the end of the event, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles supplies Expo 2015 with a fleet of cars used for travel within the area and in car sharing for the numerous guest delegations that will arrive from every corner of the world. The Group has made 35 vehicles available, 21 of which are methane-powered Fiat 500Ls. The delivery of another 50 500L methane/biomethane cars is also planned car sharing for the delegations, 10 500e electric service cars and 10 representative cars. The methane 500L is part of a wide range of natural gas vehicles offered by the Group, a leader in this technology in Europe for over 15 years. Fiat believes that methane is today the most effective solution among those available for solving pollution problems in urban areas (for example thanks to the reduction of reduced particulate emissions to practically zero) and for reducing CO2 emissions (23% less compared to petrol operation). Furthermore, methane represents a potential renewable source thanks to the development of biomethane. CNH, for its part, will show, in particular, the progress achieved in the use of machines for efficient and environmentally friendly agriculture.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is the seventh largest automaker in the world. It designs, develops, manufactures and markets cars, commercial vehicles, components and production systems. The brands Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Fiat Professional, Jeep, Lancia, Ram, Ferrari and Maserati report to FCA. SRT, the sports division dedicated to high-performance vehicles, and Mopar, the brand that offers after-sales services and spare parts, Comau (production systems), Magneti Marelli (components) and Teksid (foundries).
