Ex Ilva, near tragedy: explosion but no injuries

New episode at Continuous casting 2 of the Steelworks 2 - Workers unharmed and investigations in progress to reconstruct the dynamics of the incident

Ex Ilva, near tragedy: explosion but no injuries

An explosion in the early hours of Monday 5 April, then the fire: this is how Easter Monday began in the former Ilva of Taranto. Fortunately, there are no injuries and none of the workers working at Steel Plant 2 at Continuous Casting 2 were injured. The USB Taranto union which released the news speaks of a "near tragedy" and specifies that "all the operators on the line are saved by a miracle".

“Confirming what we have been saying for some time, the plant safety condition is strongly compromised and has clearly worsened under Ami-Morselli management. Today, only by a miracle, the umpteenth, there have been no victims”, writes Francesco Rizzo of the Usb Taranto union in a note.

YOU CAN'T HANDLE IT ANYMORE, SERIOUS RISK FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY

“We can't stand it anymore – he continues -. The Government must intervene immediately, removing those who, with unfortunate and superficial management, are concerned with punishing those who share the airing of Sabrina Ferilli's Fiction 'Svegliati Amore Mio', instead of guaranteeing the maintenance of the systems that are now collapsing, thus putting serious risk to the health and safety of operators and citizens".

ARCELOR MITTAL: “SAFELY MANAGED EVENT”

Arcelor Mittal Italia in turn specifies that "no interruption of the production cycle, nor damage to personnel and plant operators occurred today. The operators and the system safely managed, according to consolidated procedures, a reaction event in the tundish during the casting phase in Steelworks 2”.

It is now a question of better understanding what happened and investigations are underway. The tundish, to which the company refers, is a large container used for the transport of steel. Something caused the explosion first and then the smoke documented on Facebook from the grassroots union.
