Eurogroup, the Portuguese Centeno new president

Portuguese finance minister Mario Centeno, who is part of the socialist government led by Antonio Costa, was elected president of the Eurogroup. The mandate will last two and a half years and can be renewed.

A few weeks ago the name of Pier Carlo Padoan was also mentioned, supported by European leaders and publicly praised by Pierre Moscovici. The Treasury Minister then withdrew, leaving the scene to Centeno, supported by the Italian Government.

Jeroen Dijsselbloem's successor as president of the Eurogroup prevailed over the finance minister of Latvia, Dana Reizniece-Ozola, Luxembourg, Pierre Gramegna and Slovakia, Peter Kazimir.
