After two years with the restrictions due to Covid, Italians have a great desire to travel, to return to normalcy. Bookings are finally giving optimism and confidence to a sector that has suffered more than others from the effects of the pandemic.
Summer 2022 holiday forecast: Short but more frequent holidays
The pandemic has definitely changed the habits of Italians, also with regards to ferie. You no longer travel for a relatively long period in a locality, now you take "hit and run" holidays, but more frequent: a weekend in June, a short break between July and the beginning of August and a holiday of at least 7 days in August. These are the plans of many Italians who will go on holiday one or more times, between June and September, for a total of 62,8 million departures, including those who will go abroad and those who, for various reasons, will not stay in structures tourist accommodation.
How much will Italians spend on summer holidays?
Italian vacationers, according to calculations by Confturismo Confcommercio, will each spend almost 300 euros for a weekend, 540 euros for a holiday of between 3 and 6 days and 1.250 for a holiday of 7 days or more, pouring into the national economy overall, with their purchases, around 47 billion euros, all inclusive (transport, stay, catering, entertainment, shopping, etc.).
With the price increases and the surge in inflation (+8% in June), the spending budget appears to have the greatest weight in the choice of travel destination by 19,3% of the sample, followed by the wealth of local attractions and the quality of the landscape, respectively at 13,5% and 12,1%. One out of two Italians has already decided and fixed everything, 16% say they don't need to book because they will choose their own solution or will go to friends or relatives, while 31% have already booked the services they need.
Favorite destinations Summer 2022 Italy: Puglia in first place
The mix of destinations returns to being the classic one of the period: 80% in Italy, 20% abroad. At the top of the ranking of preferences, the Puglia followed by Sicilia e Toscana but with excellent performance also of Emilia Romagna, Sardinia e Calabria. Abroad, it is preferred Greece and, following with a little detachment, Spain, France e Croatia.
